36 dead after Taiwan train derails in tunnel

At least 36 people were killed and seventy-two injured In Taiwan when a train derailed in a tunnel on Friday in eastern Taiwan.

Taiwan’s Central Emergency Operation center said the train, Taroko Express was carrying 360 passengers from Taipei to Taitung mostly tourists for annual Tomb Sweeping at the start of a long weekend.

The eight-car was travelling to the southeastern coastal city of Taitung when it came off the rails in a tunnel near Chongde, Hualien at around 9.30am on a public holiday, according to the fire department.

Police said the initial probe showed the accident was caused by an improperly braked truck which fell from the slope and hit the train as it emerged from the tunnel.
